Care Guide

Every rug from The House of Looms is handwoven by skilled artisans, designed to last for generations.

Proper care not only preserves its beauty but also enhances its character over time. Follow our care recommendations below based on your rug type.

1. Hand-Knotted Rugs – The Heirloom Art

Overview:

Hand-knotted rugs are the most durable and luxurious form of weaving - each knot is tied by hand on a loom, often taking months to complete. These are true collectibles meant to last a lifetime (or more) with care.

Care Instructions:

  • Vacuuming: Vacuum once a week using a low-suction setting. Avoid beater bars or brushes that can pull on knots. Use a handheld nozzle to gently clean the surface.
Always vacuum in the direction of the pile, not against it.
  • Rotation: Rotate your rug every 6 months to ensure even wear, especially in sunlit or high-traffic areas.
  • Sunlight Protection: Natural dyes can fade with prolonged exposure. Use blinds or curtains to protect your rug from direct sunlight.
  • Cleaning Spills:
  1. Act immediately — blot the spill gently using a clean white cotton cloth.
  2. Avoid rubbing as it can spread the stain.
  3. Use plain cold water for most spills. If needed, use a mild pH-neutral soap.
  • Professional Cleaning: Have your rug professionally cleaned every 18-24 months by a specialist experienced with hand-knotted rugs. Avoid steam or chemical cleaning.
  • Storage: Roll (never fold) your rug with the pile facing inward. Wrap it in a breathable cotton sheet (avoid plastic) and store it in a dry area off the floor.

2. Hand-Tufted Rugs – Modern Comfort & Craftsmanship

Overview:

Hand-tufted rugs are made by punching yarn into a stretched canvas using a tufting gun, then finished with a cotton or latex backing. They combine craftsmanship with affordability and contemporary appeal.

Care Instructions:

  • Vacuuming: Vacuum regularly (1–2 times a week) with a suction-only vacuum - avoid using brush rolls that can loosen the tufts.
For long-pile or loop-pile rugs, use a handheld vacuum for gentle cleaning.
  • Shedding: Shedding of loose fibers is natural for the first few months - this will gradually reduce over time.
  • Spot Cleaning:
  1. Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth.
  2. For tougher stains, mix mild soap with water and gently dab - do not soak the rug.
  3. Avoid harsh chemicals or bleach.
  • Backing Protection: Since tufted rugs have a latex/canvas backing, avoid excessive moisture.
Use a rug pad underneath to prevent slipping and allow air circulation.
  • Professional Cleaning: Professional dry cleaning is recommended every 12–18 months to maintain freshness and prevent backing damage.

3. Handloom Rugs – Subtle Elegance, Everyday Ease

Overview:

Handloom rugs are woven on traditional pit looms or frame looms - offering a flat, sleek profile with minimal pile. They’re elegant, lightweight, and ideal for modern homes.

Care Instructions:

  • Regular Cleaning: Vacuum weekly using a low suction setting to remove surface dust.
Shake the rug outdoors occasionally to loosen trapped debris.
  • Spill Management:
  1. Immediately blot any liquid using a white cloth or paper towel.
  2. Avoid rubbing as it can distort the weave.
  3. For persistent stains, use a small amount of wool-safe detergent diluted in cold water.
  • Moisture Precaution: Avoid placing handloom rugs in damp or humid spaces (like basements or bathrooms) as natural fibers can absorb moisture and develop mildew.
  • Rug Pad: Always use a rug pad underneath - it adds cushioning, prevents sliding, and extends rug life.
  • Professional Care: Have your rug professionally cleaned every 12-18 months to maintain fiber strength and color vibrancy.

General Tips for All Rugs

  • Avoid dragging heavy furniture over rugs - lift instead.
  • Place protectors under furniture legs to prevent denting.
  • In case of pet accidents, clean immediately with mild detergent and cold water.
  • For deep cleaning or restoration, always consult a professional specializing in handmade rugs.

A Living Art Form

Remember, handmade rugs age gracefully - subtle color variations, worn edges, or uneven fibers are part of their story.
With mindful care, your rug will continue to add warmth, comfort, and character to your space for decades.
